When you’re out with friends for dinner, splitting the bills at the end can get complicated. Do you divide the cost evenly? Will the restaurant get annoyed?
Until now, this action has been completely manual, inefficient and just downright uncomfortable for all parties involved. Due to this common struggle, the business idea for Groupee came about; it’s a mobile application, geared to any consumer who wants to pay painlessly and instantly in pairs or more.
“I knew from first-hand experience that making this process easier would benefit so many people.”
“I was working as a waiter at my friend’s restaurant where I realised that split bills was a real pain point for both the restaurant and the customers,” says founder, Jarred Baker. “I knew from first-hand experience that making this process easier would benefit so many people, hence Groupee was born.”
The concept of the app is to turn bills with multiple payers into one transaction. “Groupee’s customer driven design leaves the bill admin to diners,” says Baker. “This way, payments are completed instantly and securely with a simple staff verification on the customer’s device — all whilst never leaving their table.”
When discussing the challenges in launching Groupee, Baker comments that the uphills he has met are no different to the common challenges that many other start-up businesses face. “With the rise in hospitality tech, there’s a lot out there with various different offerings,” says Baker. “So it’s important for me to personally meet with as many restaurant owners as possible. However, there is only one of me, supported by an awesome but small team, so the ride so far has been exhausting but exhilarating.”
